I’m always trying to get my kids to get fresh air and sunshine ’cause it’s good for you.  We live in Hawaii where there’s plenty of both.  That’s why I love it here. 

A long time ago, I read Rogue Warrior.  It was a true story about this guy who was a Navy SEAL, and one thing that always stuck out in my mind about his experience with the SEALS is when these guys weren’t killin’ and trainin’, they were out sunnin’ – as in sun bathing.  Now these guys weren’t doing it for their looks.  They were doing it for their health.

You ever notice how tan people just look healther?  That’s cause they typically are.   There was a time parents made their kids go out and play.   Sometimes they would actually say, “Go out and play!”  and sometimes they would say, “Go out and get some fresh air and sunshine!”

I’m always telling my two youngest, ages 6 & 8, that they need to get out and get some “fresh air and sunshine” because I know that will help them stay healthy.  It works for me.  I can’t remember the last time I got a flu shot or the flu.  I think I the last time I got the flu was when I got the shot – hmmm…

When my kids get a cold here in Hawaii, it usally doesn’t last long.  Right now, they’re in the mainland with my wife, visiting friends.  It’s 49 degrees where they’re at.  It’s a cool 69 degrees where we live on Oahu, at night.  Anyways, I think my son has had a cold for over a week since he’s been in the mainland.

If he were here, I’d take him to the park for some, you guessed it – fresh air and sunshine.

If you live in a place where you can’t get much sunshine, particularly during the winter, you should move to Hawaii.  Or start taking vitamin D.

Vitamin D does for you what sunshine does.  Strengthens your bones and boosts your immune system.
